Guess what? It’s our birthday! Before we go off and celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we wanted to take the time and look back on the journey from small Danish start-up, to a leading and innovative figure within the travel industry.

What is momondo?

Before telling you our life story, we want to brush up on the basics. momondo is the free, independent and inspirational travel search engine comparing billions of cheap flights, hotels and car hire deals. We offer a bold and colourful travel universe that provides complete price transparency across flights, hotels and cars, inspiring – and enabling – everyone to explore our wonderful world. We also offer free local and global travel inspiration to help you choose where to go, when to go, and what to do once you’re there. We’re dedicated to giving our users the best travel search experience possible, on user-friendly platforms.

How it all began

momondo was founded by innovative IT programmers with a passion for travel and was launched as a flight search engine, all the way back in 2006 in Denmark. The ambition of the founders was to create a travel brand that would not only offer people complete price transparency across the web, but would also inspire them to explore new destinations and to stay curious about our world.

Today we are internationally praised for our unique product and services, and have been recommended by leading media such as the New York Times, CNN, Frommer’s, CBS, The Daily Telegraph, and many more!

Where are we now?

10 years on, we continue to strive to think differently. We provide travellers in 35 countries (and counting!) the opportunity to search across over a thousand airlines and travel agencies every day, and inspire you along the way with our creative side. From innovative features like Trip Finder, to competitions, travel articles, and our dreamy Instagram feed, we want to enable and inspire you to become your very own best travel agent, so you can go out and start exploring the world, adopting our company slogan – stay curious.

Travel with a purpose

Over the years, momondo has launched several campaigns that have encouraged and inspired people to let their curiosity lead them to new experiences. In 2016, we launched our Purpose movement, which is the biggest project so far in our mission of opening up the world for everyone. We invite people all over the globe to take part in this movement and share our vision of a world where our differences are a source of inspiration and development, not intolerance and prejudice – so we can all enjoy a more diversified world. We firmly believe that travel helps us to see the world with new eyes: when we experience something different, we begin to see things differently.

Our desire to bring people together and open the world came in to full force early this June with the release of The DNA Journey campaign.

At point of writing, The DNA Journey video has been viewed over 175 million times and has been discussed in over 500 articles across the world. On top of this, 170,378 people entered our DNA Journey competition, which offered one winner the chance to win a journey of a lifetime: a trip to visit each country found within their DNA.

The future of momondo …

With a strong, decade-long foundation, we step into the future with a continued ambition to innovate and inspire within the travel industry. Right now, we are more than 200 people from 35 nationalities. To accommodate our expanding workforce, we have relocated to a fantastic new office right in the centre of the Danish capital, Copenhagen. The building comes with its own incredible history, first as a town mansion from 1733, and then becoming the official post and telegraph hub of Denmark in 1780 (Denmark’s first ever stamp was printed here in 1851!).

Now, it’s the momondo HQ; a beautiful, large scale space that provides us the room to hire even more innovators – all dedicated to bring you the best travel search experience possible.
